The concept of blind faith is often difficult for rational people to comprehend. Rational people believe that every aspect of life must be able to be explained with logic. However, rationalism and faith often come in conflict with each other, creating an exceptional strife in the minds of those unable to accept that which cannot be viewed. In such divergence, the concept of nihilism is often planted into the mind of those who are incapable of acknowledging human nature and the spiritual and natural laws of life. Nihilism, the rejection of all religious and moral principles, often in the belief that life is meaningless can lead to chaos and suffering of a society. Dostoevsky intended to show how destructive an idea could be for an individual, a nation, or mankind. His rejection of moral principles of man, using the will of the people to justify his action leads Rodya in an attempt to rationalize his actions to out weigh the guilt, I did not bow down to you [Sonia], I bowed down to all the suffering of humanity, he said wildly and walked away to the window† (Dostoevsky 295). It is the spiritual nature vs. mankind, our own attempts to defy fate and push logic and reason past the moral nature of oneself in hope to justify the unjust. To push the limits of reality and test the natural laws which oppose us. Raskolnikov’s choice to disregard such moral, and religious, beliefs is his demise. Through Raskolnikov’s hope to ease the guilt of the murder by rationalizing his crime, Rodya’s motives are discerns his objections and brings to light basis of human reasoning. Raskolnikov feels everything for the people in which he encounters, acting upon poverty he sees around him, attempting to benefit others by committing such a heinous crime.
